Caffe Rosso Stories
Wanted to do a little writeup to highlight a sweet project I had a chance to work on this week. I spent 3 days hanging out at Caffe Rosso in Ramsay, filming the baristas, talking with them and capturing the vibe of the place.
I like 3rd wave Coffee places and I particularly approached Caffe Rosso in Ramsay because of it’s unconventional location, in an unconventional neighbourhood, a place that the locals walk to, and people from further away make the effort to stop in. Sometimes all you need to have a great time is a cup of coffee and a good conversation with friends.
I see places like this where culture thrives, where culture is, for lack of a better word, cultivated. Where a painter or an artist walks in, where the next great idea is percolating in the mind of the guy next to her and where a young family can stop in with their toddler and relax. These people influence each other in way that may not be apparent at first but I feel that the muse flows between them like the smell of roasted beans.
If Calgary is to be the culture capital of Canada in 2012, places like this are to be highlighted, in fact, any place where people serendipitously gather to think, create, regroup and work ought to be recognized.. in places like this lies the culture that sometimes gets overlooked, the culture that ultimately a society is remembered for..
I want to thank Caffe Rosso, Laura for the initial interest, Cole for all of his help, the baristas there, Dave, Doug, Albert, Sarah and Melody and the patrons of Caffe Rosso at Ramsey, who make the place truly unique in a very organic way.
Video coming soon.

Slamberta 2011 post wrap-up.
Slamberta 2011 was a incredible night of music video and shorts. Dramatic, comedy, period pieces and music videos, shot in HD, 8mm and more. The wide range of talent, perspective and vision is but a sample of the unique storytellers that live in Alberta.
The lineup, as the night went on was:
Blue Eyed Boy – Todd Kipp and Marc Vandergraff
Matt Andersen’s Fired Up – Troy Niemans
The Family Journal – Cole Pollack
CGY / Day Job – Luke Black
Defensive Aggressive – James Recksiedler
The Sophomore Jakes’ Mischief!!! Mischief!!! – Marcus Rideout
I want to thank the filmmakers for providing the content for me, for attending and being an important part of the indie film scene in Calgary and by proxy, Alberta. I want to thank the people who attended for supporting local film, independent Film and personally, for supporting creative types such as myself who are in constant need of validation and praise, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Big shout out to Melrose Cafe and Bar, for the great venue, excellent setup, video and sound. The staff was incredible, they took real good care of me, solved all my technical issues and turned a potential blow out into a great evening of film. Big thanks to Steve personally.
It was a great time, and will definitely evaluate the successes of the event, and will look forward to Slamberta 2012.
Thank you.

Slamberta – Best of Alberta Shorts 2011
I’m calling for local filmmakers (local being A: Calgary specifically or B: from
anywhere in Alberta) to submit their work for a showcase at Melrose Cafe
and Bar. There may or may not be prizes. Basically I’m opening it up to
anyone who submitted work to the Calgary International Film Festival
this year and didn’t get in. This is an opportunity to screen it during
the days of the festival at venue downtown, to crowds who might want to
see more films. This event is in no way associated with CIFF or
Slamdance, if anything it takes its spirit from the origins of Slamdance.
Type: Short film and music video
Length: no more than 15 minutes.
Format: preferable in MP4 format, in order to make a DVD, this is how
Melrose can show it on their screens.
I’d love to get a couple of short films and a few music videos to fill
up the evening.
Location: Melrose Cafe and Bar
Date and time: Oct 2nd, 7pm.
